Zachary Onchuri dropped out of school back in 2009 because he could not pay his school fees. He started farming which gives him up to Sh 1.2M net profit by the end of every season.
He dropped out of college because he could not raise the money needed for his tuition. He, therefore, started selling boiled eggs in town. This equally was not successful because the county council officers were on his neck demanding tax.
He later joined his friend in Kilifi who sold fruits, and was introduced fruit business. It was good since he could make Sh 500 a day. He sold watermelons and pineapples.
The rate at which watermelons were consumed motivated him to start farming. He collected the knowledge from some farmers and bought seeds at Sh 5,000.
He leased a quarter acre of land for the same. Unfortunately, the first time, everything withered and the seedlings that survived were not healthy due to lack of enough knowledge of tendering the watermelon seedlings.
He started again after borrowing a loan worth Sh 50,000. The owner of the land gave him another ½ acre of land which he could pay for after the harvest.
At the harvesting season, he sold the watermelons at Sh 200,000 which after subtracting all expesnses, he would remain with Sh140,000. This drove him to fully venture into the business.
He has now leased 47 acres of land from which he produces watermelons. He supplies them to Kilifi town and Malindi earning him Sh 900,000 to 1.2 M which he uses to educate his siblings and cater for his single mother in Kisii.
