Speaking in Kitui on Tuesday, Raila who was accompanied by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu, Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana alongside other  Kamba politicians said unity will see the region progress.

Raila said disunity among elected leaders is partly to blame for the region's poverty.

He asked the leaders to take advantage of the  ‘building bridges’ initiative he started with president Uhuru Kenyatta after their famous March 9 handshake and push for the region's development.

“We must forgive each other and forge to work together in unity for the interest of our country,” Raila said.

Raila also urged elected leaders to shun politics and work for the people.

He said continued political debates will not help solve the social, economic and political issues facing the country.

The former Prime Minister at the same time assured the Kamba community and Kenyans at large that his quest for electoral reforms is still alive.

He refuted claims that the March 9 handshake ‘killed’ the quest for electoral justice.

A section of Ukambani politicians is not seeing eye to eye over political differences.

The disunity among leaders has often been blamed to the regions high poverty levels.

Some Ukambani politicians have been piling pressure on Kalonzo to bring the community together before bidding for the 2022 presidential election.

Kalonzo and  Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua are among top politicians who have declared their interests in the presidential seat in 2022.
