In Kisumu, two spoken word artists are currently making headlines both on social media platforms and Kenyan dailies. 

David Weda popularly known as ‘Dawe Dawe’ or ‘Juogi Wuoyo’ and his counterpart Janabii Puthrambaka have risen to fame and currently named top influential spoken word artists in the lakeside city. 

During the popular NTV show #TheTrendLive staged at Acacia premier hotel, Kisumu over the weekend, both Dawe Dawe and Janabii Puthrambaka presented amazing spoken words that thrilled fans who were watching the show at the comfort of their homes, and those who thronged the venue to have one on one experience with both the artists and media crews who hosted the event. 

The poets revealed to their fans their life experience in regard to art. According to Puthrambaka, he started performing spoken words when he turned 17. 

“I thought that I needed to tell people about the stuff I saw in Kisumu. The first time I came to Kisumu I saw Lake Victoria and it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen,” Puthrambaka told Amina, The Trend host. 

He also revealed that he doesn’t talk much but only does it through art.

“I really don’t talk much with people, so the only way I can talk to them more is by performing,” he said. 

The influential Kisumu poet outlined some of the big awards he has bagged within seven years of his performance as a spoken word artist.

 Among them was the 2016 UNESCO Cultural Festival Awards which made him top nationally handing him an opportunity to perform in Paris, France. 

He also won several awards in the KTCA Award, the Vybes Award and the Lake Basin Awards event hosted in Kisumu. 

David Weda alias Dawe Dawe or the famous ‘Juogi Wuoyo’ also revealed that he won the best performer award in the Lake International Poetry and Film Festival Awards and the Best Poet KTCA Awards 2016. 

The two head a group known as  Poetry After Lunch Kisumu, which gives a podium to new poets within the lakeside city.
