The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has been placed on the spot over allegations of detaining a female soldier at its Lanet Military School in Nakuru County.
Reports indicate that Mercy Mweru Kurii, a soldier at the facility, has been under detention since her arrest by the military police on January 9, 2019.
Elijah Kibet Kemboi, Mercy's husband has since sued the Defence Principal Secretary and the Attorney General in pursuit of answers, claiming that no charges have been pressed against her.
Ruling on the issue, Nakuru High Court Judge Joel Ngugi gave KDF and the government until Tuesday, April 2 to provide an explanation behind the detention.
“When the matter comes up, the Ministry must respond to the suit filed against it,” the judge was quoted by the Standard.
In an affidavit on March 25, Elijah complained that his wife is suffering in detention and has not been in contact with their daughter.
He added that attempts to communicate with her have also been turned down by the KDF.
“I have made numerous attempts to visit her, but they will not allow me to. Police have not arraigned her in court to charge her officially,” he said.
The Ministry of Defence is also yet to respond to a a letter written to the Officer in Lanet.
