Motorists using Garissa road in North Eastern region have been asked to use alternative routes following the recent terror scares by Al-Shabaab militants.
Mandera Bus Sacco chairman Mohamed Bardad said non-local travellers have been asked to use the Moyale route as suspected Al-Shabaab militants are targeting public transport.
“Non-local travellers have been advised to use the Moyale route and avoid the Garissa road over terror threat. Transport for vehicles plying to Nairobi, however, resumed on Monday,” said Bardad.
Mandera Police Commander Jeremiah Kosiom said his officers are on the ground and they have increased the number of police patrolling the roads to ensure there is enough security.
Transport in North Eastern has been affected after suspected Al-Shabaab militants were sighted along the Mandera-Rhamu-Elwak road over the weekend.
Kosiom said security agencies are on high alert as the suspected militants are targeting public transport.
Hundreds of passengers have been affected by the terror threat after different roads were closed owing to increased Al-Shabaab attacks targeting security agents and non-local travellers in the region.
Non-locals have asked the government to enhance security and provide armed police escort to buses plying Garissa-Mandera-Nairobi route to enable them to travel out of the region safely.
