The government has begun evicting squatters that have been illegally occupying land earmarked for the construction of the multi-billion ultra-modern Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret town.
Police officers were on Friday deployed at the Kiplombe land where bulldozers were deployed to demolish houses and other illegal structures.
At least 55 families were affected in the demolitions that come after the expiry of an eviction notice that had been issued to the squatters by the MTRH management.
The squatters that are occupying part of the 200 acres GK prisons piece of land had been required to move out by Wednesday, August 22, 2018. This is to allow for the expected commencement of the construction of the 2,000-bed multi-speciality hospital that will replace the current referral hospital in Eldoret.
The affected families will now be forced to spend the night in the cold as some said they have no other place to go to.
“We have lived here for long and this month we were told to move out. This morning all our houses have been demolished. We urge the government to come to our rescue, we are now without houses, our children will suffer in the cold,” said one of the mothers whose house was demolished.
“I have lived here for all my life. I was born here, my kids were also born here, where will we go now,” added another mother.
