Drama was witnessed in Bomwanda village in Bonchari, Kisii County, on Sunday morning after a man clashed with his wife over the self-proclaimed Prophet David Owuor.
Locals said the trouble started when the man, identified as Dominic Machoni, demanded that his wife Pauline Nyaboke not to go to church.
"I heard Machoni speaking in a loud voice telling his wife that she should stay at home and look after the livestock and threatened her that if she resists she should get married to Owuor," said Jared Morira, a close neighbour.
According to Nyaboke, she had no reason to miss Sunday's sermon as she believed in Prophet Owuor's church terming her husband's claim as discriminative and primitive.
"Nyaboka is Prophet Owuor's follower and she vowed not to miss church. Machoni was angered by Nyaboke's firm stand and descended on her with kicks and blows," Morira said.
John Ongao, area assistant chief, said it took the intervention of members of the public to rescue the woman who was being beaten thoroughly.
"This is not the first time the couple is fighting because of Owuor. The husband has been against the wife's decision to go to Owuor's church but he has not given his reasons," he said.
Ongao urged the woman to obey her husband to ensure the marriage remains strong.
