For 16 years now, no leader outside South Africa's government has ever been invited to deliver a speech, usually that revolves around democracy in Mandela's rural home.

Interestingly, even among the South Africans invited, only the ANC President makes iconic speech in celebration of Mandela's birthday.

The event is part of the major ceremony, which often takes place at Johannesburg, and this year, Barack Obama was the chief guest in Tuesday's event.

Hours to 4pm local time, Raila, in the company of President Cyril Ramaphosa and his predecessor Jacob Juma, were ushered in by Mandela's grandson, Zwelivelive.

Later on this evening, Raila is expected to deliver a historic speech that will touch on Mandela life and his contribution to democracy.

Among those accompanying Raila include his daughter Winnie Odinga and personal aide Silas Jakakimba.
