Confirming the incident, rights group Haki Africa said Hamisi graduated from University of Nairobi in 2017 and is married to wife Zaitun who is 8 months pregnant with their first child.

"Despite efforts of the family and Haki Africa to follow up with Tanzania's immigration and security authorities, no information has been forthcoming," said the organisation's Executive Director Hussein Khalid on December 30.

The last communication from Hamisi to his father and wife was that he was arrested and being held at Duga Police Station just beyond the Horo Horo border, said the Coast-based rights group.

Addressing the press flanked by family members of Hamisi, Haki Africa called on the Kenyan authorities to follow the matter up and ensure Hamisi is returned safely.

"We are also calling on the Tanzanian authorities to respect their own laws and accord Hamisi his legal rights by either releasing him immediately or charging him in court if he has broken any law."
