Sportpesa Supercup champions Gor Mahia failed to make the most of their credentials and ‘favorite’ tag after losing to minnows Mbao FC on penalties.
Having played out to a 1-1 draw in regulation time, Mbao FC made the most of their golden chance to see off the champions, progressing 4-3.
Despite being starved of the ball for much of the proceedings, Mbao held their nerve to snatch what goes down to the annals of history as one of the biggest upsets in the competition.
With Dennis Oliech making his appearance on the international scene after a long absence, it was expected that Gor will progress with ease but after having a goal by Erisa Ssekisambu wrongly ruled out for offside, it was clear that Gor would need a divine moment of brilliance to see off their opponent’s spirited fight.
Gor finally took the lead in the 60th minute and it had to be former Kenya International and fan favorite Oliech who found the back of the net from a resulting spot kick after Amos Charles had been adjudged to have handled the ball within the area.
In the 75th minute, parity was restored when Aboubakari Ngalema slotted home to ensure the match a to be decided on penalties.
Gor’s Harun Shakava and Shafik Batambuze (hit the woodwork) missed from 12 yards out allowing David Mwasa to round off a prestigious victory for Mbao.
