Two people were arraigned before a Mombasa Court to answer to charges of conspiracy to carry out an act of terror.
Swaleh Juma Salim was being charged together with Leila Omar Rashid following their arrest on June 10 after an explosion at a house in Likoni, Mombasa County.
The court heard that on the material date, an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) exploded inside a house in Likoni when Juma was trying to assemble it.
Juma who is facing a second charge of being in possession of an IED appeared in court with a bandaged arm believed to have sustained injuries when the IED went off.
Leila stands accused of trying to interfere with evidence following the explosion by cleaning and dusting off explosive materials at her residence.
The two accused persons, in a previous hearing of their case on June 11, were charged together with Abdulhamid Islam Shahad and Zamda Omar Mwashima but the prosecution withdrew the charges against the other two suspects.
Juma and Leila while denying all the charges filed an application through lawyer Jared Magolo, to be released on bond saying that they have been in police custody for a long time and that they have been charged already.
“The police have been with the suspects for the last 13 days despite being given 10 days. I don’t see the reason for police to continue holding the suspects,” said lawyer Magolo.
Mombasa Senior Resident Magistrate Martin Rabera, however, directed that their bond application be handled by another magistrate, Ruth Amwayi.
Rabera further directed that Juma should be taken to hospital before being presented in court.
