Weeks after the administrators of Garissa University announced that the institution faced closure, education CS Amina Mohammed has finally broken her silence on the matter.

In a statement that may not augur well with the institution's staff, CS Amina now says the university should lay off some staff to reduce the wage bill.

Ms Amina Mohamed further advised that the university must address its ratio of technical to support staff working in the institutions noting that the current numbers of support staff were too high.

“I want to say that we should encourage and support rationalization initiatives to guarantee the sustainability of our institutional operations. We should not be thinking about closing down universities,” CS Amina said while responding to queries from the parliament's house committee on education.

The concerns follow a statement issued a fortnight ago by the Garissa University vice-chancellor that the college was staring at a possible closure over lack of funds.
