Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has urged the government to stop the ongoing demolition of buildings on riparian land in Nairobi.

Waititu argued that the agencies involved should instead investigate the matter, and if any house is found built on riparian land, the owner of the building should cater for the costs of diverting the river.

"What am seeing...if there are people supporting the ongoing demolition of buildings, I personally don't support it. Let them investigate and find out if your house is close to the river, then you should be told it is your responsibility (house owner) to make sure that the river is moved a bit. Otherwise, demolishing houses is not a solution, honestly speaking it is such a big loss," said Waititu.

Last week, two malls were brought down in Nairobi. Ukay Mall in Westlands was on Friday demolished, a day after Southend Mall situated opposite T-Mall along Lang'ata road was demolished on grounds that it had been constructed on riparian land.
