Last month, Ugandan police were accused of arresting 25 Kenyans for allegedly fishing in deep eaters of Lake Victoria, but they were released after security meeting in Homa Bay.

On Thursday, fishermen from Budalang'i areas claimed that Uganda police were forcing them to eat raw fish as a punishment for allegedly fishing in Ugandan waters.

“It is inhumane for Ugandan officers to subject us to eat raw fish at gunpoint,” a fisherman complained as quoted by the Nation.

“They also take away and destroy our boats and nets yet we have spent a lot of money to purchase the gear.”

Mr Sylvester Kaywa, the Busia County Beach Management Unit chairperson, on Thursday urged the President to intervene and rescue them from what they say are huge losses.

“We appeal to President Kenyatta to dialogue with Mr Museveni for a lasting solution to this matter already rendering residents jobless,” Mr Kaywa told the Nation.

The fishermen have also appealed to President Uhuru Kenyatta to ensure security lights are installed in the area to allow them fish at night.

“Security lights will make us feel safer at night and also allow us to take advantage of the calmer night-time waters of the lake,” said Joseph Odour, a fisherman at Port Victoria.
