Human rights activist Boniface Mwangi on Monday launched a scathing attack against Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and opposition leader Raila Odinga over the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).
A group of activists under Haki Africa waged demonstrations in the coastal city of Mombasa, questioning the monopoly of SGR.
Several people especially truck drivers have lost their source of livelihood after initiation of SGR, which now serves as the main link between Mombasa and Nairobi.
But Mwangi accused Governor Joho and Mr Odinga of 'doing nothing' despite the two getting many votes from the region in 2017 polls.
"Coastal people voted for Raila and Joho. The betrayers of Mombasa people are those two people. They allowed President Uhuru Kenyatta to collapse the regional economy. Coast people, reject slavery of Joho and his brother Abu. (Watu wa Mombasa walipigia kura @RailaOdinga @HassanAliJoho. Wasaliti wa watu wa Mombasa ni hao wawili, wabunge na ma MCA. Hao ndio walimpa Uhuru @StateHouseKenya ruhusa aharibu Uchumi wa Mombasa.Watu wa pwani kataeni utumwa wa Joho na Ndungu yake Abu. #okoamombasa #BlackMonday," Boniface Mwangi said in a tweet.
Mwangi further said: "Joho agreed to go to bed with Uhuru. You elected him to fight for you but he has since abandoned his obligation as an elected governor."
Joho, a close ally of Raila, at first opposed the SGR project and used politics around it to retain his seat. However, the handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga has tamed his initial opposition.
SGR is so far Uhuru's mega-project but it's yet to live to expectations.
China withdrew from plans to finance Naivasha-Kisumu line, with the country's ballooning debt partly contributing to the decision.
