Kenya's Chief Justice David Maraga has for the first time revealed events surrounding his troubled life both as a kid and teeneger when growing in the interior parts of Nyamira.
At Catholic University of East Africa, Maraga said that he first wore a pair of shorts after his circumcision at the age of 10, an indication how life was unbearable in the village.
Further, he said, the first time he came across shoes was when reporting to Kisii School, where he was admitted after performing well in primary school.
"Having been born into a rather poor family in Nyamira, I got to wear my first pair of shoes when I was admitted to Secondary School, and that was only because it was compulsory. Worse still, I got to wear my first pair of shorts only after circumcision, at the age of 10.
"It is perhaps a good thing that those were not the days of today’s pervasive selfies and paparazzi, otherwise I wonder what pictures of the Chief Justice as a young man would be circulating in the social media today. There is one I took with my first car, a Volkswagen beetle which looks interesting. Perhaps I should have it tweeted an I see the reaction," he narrated.
But after managing an admission to UoN, he would start taking liquor, something he says ruined his life for two decades before quitting.
At his Nyamira backyard, Maraga is popular, something manifested through protests that rocked the region when President Uhuru Kenyatta fired shots at the judiciary after nullification of his victory in 2017.
He is a Church elder and rarely misses church on Saturdays given that he's a staunch SDA follower.
