Villagers in Boisukia village in Kisii were shocked after a middle-aged woman reported her husband to the police for "robbery".
Divinah Rabera on Sunday reported her husband, Douglas Mogendi at Igonga police post before she fled fearing for her life.
“Divinah claimed that Mogendi stole her Sh500 and he has been stealing from other people’s farms in the village. She volunteered information to Igonga police post and officers arrested Mogendi,” said a local James Oyondi.
Oyondi said Mogendi threatened to behead his wife prompting her to flee from home.
Area assistant chief, Benjamin Ayuma condemned the incident saying Divinah could have informed Nyumba Kumi officials instead of reporting her husband to police.
“This was a family disagreement and could have been solved by Nyumba Kumi officials. It is bad that Divinah reported him to police before informing Nyumba Kumi officials or me,” he said.
The administrator said Mogendi was released by police after he refunded back the Sh500 he had taken from his wife’s handbag.
He, however, cautioned men against taking their wives’ belongings without their knowledge.
The chief called on couples to live in peace and stop unnecessary quarrels and fights.
Police-constable Edward Obutu said most men in the area are gamblers and this has increased theft of household items.
