A man is currently fighting for his life at the Kisii Teaching and Referral hospital after he attacked and beaten to near death by a group of armed robbers.
The incident happened on Tuesday night in Itibo village, Nyakoe in Kitutu Chache South.
Confirming the incident, area chief Charles Nyaoso said the armed thugs descended on Wilfred Ongoncho with crude weapons when he tried to shield his mother Elmelda Ongoncho who was the thugs' target.
"Ongoncho was in the house with his mother when four armed thugs stormed the house with an aim to steal the money they had after selling a piece of land. Wilfred tried to shield his mother when the thugs turned against him," said the chief.
The chief said Ongoncho and his mother were rushed to hospital by neighbours after the thugs escaped into darkness without stealing anything from the house.
"The victims were rushed to KTRH but, unfortunately, his mother died at while receiving treatment. Mr Wilfred on his part is still in a critical condition," said Nyaoso.
Nyaoso said crime cases have risen in the area and appealed to local youths who have ventured into criminal activities must stop before the law catches up with them.
