Lamu County commissioner Gilbert Kitiyo has Lamu residents internally displaced by terrorism will not be compensated by the government.

Kitiyo's remarks comes following calls for compensation for people who fled in Jima, Poromoko, Pandanguo, Maleli and Nyongoro villages months ago after Al Shabaab attacks.

About 2,500 residents are living as IDPs at the Kastaka Kairu and Witu AIC church camps in Lamu West.

The residents decided to flew their homes due to many attacks by the terrorists who targets civilians and police.

IDPs want to be paid the entire period they have been at the camps since wild animals and herders destroyed their crops.

Kitiyo said the government will not compensate the IDPs.

He said the government can only beef up security, protect them and ensure stability in the region.

"No one will be compensated since it  wasn't the government's fault for people to end up in IDP camps. The government will only restore normalcy by ensuring security is tight", he said.
