The Governor notes that any changes to the 2010 Constitution should be about strengthening the electoral agencies to guarantee fairness in future general elections.

According to Ngilu, electoral fraud and injustices is what is ailing the country and is the cause of tribalism, corruption and discrimination.

Speaking to journalists in Kitui town on Friday, the NARC governor said that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) needs serious reforms.

“What we should be talking about now is about electoral reforms because the next general election is not far away,” she said.

Ngilu further said that the referendum should be about reducing the wage bill, adding that Kenyans have been overburdened with taxes.

The governor opposed the proposal to create more political seats, saying the move will hurt Kenyans.

“Kenyans don’t need more representation as some people are proposing, what they need is for the taxes to be lowered down,” she said.

A section of politicians led by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga is pushing for a referendum to amend the structures of governance.

Raila has been quoted saying that the referendum is unstoppable and it was part of his unity deal with President Uhuru Kenyatta during the March 9 handshake.

Other leaders among them former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka are also in support of the referendum but on condition that it should not be about scraping some political seats.
