Jubilee Party Vice Chairman David Murathe’s recent statement that Mt Kenya voters are not bound by any commitment to support Deputy President William Ruto’s 2022’s presidency is a wake-up call.
According to Kiambu-based politician, Gladys Chania, the DP should rethink his strategy to woo Mt Kenya voters because voices of dissent are increasing by the day.
“This is not the first time this issue is coming up. It has come up before with Hon Kabogo and others still talked about it and here we are now. It should be a wake-up call for the DP,” said Chania on Thursday when contacted.
The former aspirant for Kiambu County Woman Representative seat observed that the DP’s political hold in the region has shifted.
Chania said she has been following the conversation not only in Kiambu but in the wider Mt Kenya region and the voices of dissent for Ruto’s support are increasing compared to last year.
“I have been following this issue all over the region and we stand at 60 to 40; the majority being against Ruto’s support and the latter are pro-Ruto. People seem to be agreeing with what Kabogo said sometime back about Mt Kenya support for Ruto,” stated the politician.
In June 2016, former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo publicly told the DP that automatic support by Mt Kenya voters was not guaranteed.
He told the DP that for him to get support from Mt Kenya, he must work for it, sentiments that the DP agreed with saying Kabogo was not at fault at all by speaking his mind.
In March, Ruto’s allies led by Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko decried a scheme by a section of Mt Kenya politicians to block the DP from the presidency in 2022.
