Kisumu Governor Professor Peter Anyang Nyong’o enjoys a unique record among his peers, having been elected as the Governor for the very first time last year.

Governor Nyong’o dethroned Jack Nyanungo Ranguma, effectively becoming the only man to dislodge a sitting Governor in Nyanza during last year’s August 8 general elections.

Nyong'o first trounced Ranguma during the ODM party Primaries.

The former County Chief contested the results before deciding to vie as an independent candidate where he again lost to Nyong’o.

Ranguma filed a petition at the Kisumu High Court after Nyong’o was declared winner of the gubernatorial race.

The case was thrown out before suffering the same fate at the Court of Appeal in Kisumu. Nyong’o, a former Senator for Kisumu, is serving his first term as Governor unlike his other colleagues in Nyanza who are serving a second term.

In fact, he is the only man in Nyanza to be elected Senator and governor subsequently.

Siaya governor Cornel Rasanga, Homa Bay’s Cyprian Awiti, Migori’s Zachary Okoth Obado, Kisii’s James Ongwae and Nyamira’s John Obiero Nyagarama are all serving their second terms after being elected in 2013 and reelected in 2017.
