According to the constitution, one can only take charge for four years thus the ongoing battle to replace Boinet, who has been at the helm since 2015.

With Deputy President William Ruto keen to have Deputy IG incharge of Administration Police Noor Gabbow in charge, State House mandarins are however keen to have three candidates considered.

Among those in pole position to takeover include Deputy IG incharge of police Njoroge Mbugua, who was single sourced by President Uhuru Kenyatta contrary to Police Service Act.

Chief Spy Major General Philip Kimeru is also said to be pushed to take control by some State House operatives.

And another shocking option is top detective George Kinoti, whose role in sweeping criminals and graft lords has gotten the backing from State House.

Sources claim that President Uhuru Kenyatta is under pressure to pick from among the three even as DP struggles to have his candidate considered.

The position, although neutral, plays a fundamental role in controlling the security sector especially during the election period.
