More than 600 families from Sofia slum in Athi River sub-county, Machakos County have been left homeless after fire gutted down their houses on Monday morning.

The 4 am incident reduced more than 50 'mabati' structures to ashes.

The area headman Peter Kanyenze said the families lost their belongings from the household items to important documents like birth and school certificates.

Others said they lost their money in the inferno.

"I was called and informed about the fire. I called the fire brigade who responded swiftly, nothing was salvaged though. Everything was burnt to the ground," Kanyenze said.

Mavoko sub-county fire brigade responded immediately ensuring the fire doesn't spread to other nearby structures.

The  Mavoko fire brigade got reinforcement from their Kajiado County counterparts.

There were no casualties following the incident.

The children of the affected families were unable to attend school since their school uniforms and books got burnt in the fierce fire.

The victims include men, women, youths, parents and their children, grandchildren.

The cause of the fire was not immediately established.
