A pastor has been arrested for allegedly defiling a 13-year-old girl in Kilungu, Makueni County.
The 53-year-old man of the cloth was nabbed in Kyakatoni village on Sunday evening.
Area assistant chief Christopher Ngundo said the accused was due for transfer to another church when he committed the heinous act.
Ngundo said the pastor conducted his last service in the church on the fateful day before he tricked and defiled the minor.
"He committed the heinous act in the church compound just after conducting his last service," Ngundo said.
The suspect is said to have attempted to commit suicide before angry locals ejected him from his house.
"After learning that his deeds had come out in the open, he tried to hang himself in his house but angry locals didn't let him. Instead, they ejected him from the house and gave him the beating of his life," Ngundo added.
Ngundo said the man was later rescued by the area chief with the assistance from members of the community policing who surrendered him to the police.
He condemned the act and urged locals to be on the forefront in the fight against such crimes.
"It is saddening that the person who is supposed to guide and lead children turns out to be the hunter, we should fight such crimes at all costs," Ngundo said.
