The animosity between Governor Alfred Mutua and former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama didn't begin today.
Until recently, the two didn't see eye to eye.
They were fond of attacking each other verbally whenever they got a chance to speak in public.
In November 2013, Governor Mutua revealed why Muthama and himself were not getting along.
This is after Muthama filled a petition in court through his lawyer John Khaminwa seeking to stop any development on land set aside for the construction of the proposed Machakos city.
Muthama said the land meant for the city's construction belong to the Ministry of Agriculture and not the Machakos County Government.
Mutua in his response claimed that Muthama was bent on frustrating the project because of a personal vendetta.
He said the former Machakos Senator's motives for filling the petition were not entirely honorable.
Mutua disclosed that the politician had vowed never to support him because he never knelt and sought his permission to view for the seat.
"At a function during the campaigns, he made it clear that he wouldn't support me since I didn't kneel before him to seek permission to pursue my candidature," Mutua said.
The two battled it out a week later at the court before judge Weldon Korir.
