Mr Boinnet whose term expired in March, handed officially at Supreme Court buildings on Monday to his successor Hillary Mutyambai, saying that he enjoyed working at the position.

During the function, Boinnet also showered praises to his successor, insisting that he's a hard-working officer who would make the police service even better.

"I am satisfied as I exit the police service. I did my best during the four years at the helm. I did my best and am happy for the opportunity to serve as the second IG," said Mr Boinnet.

He added: "I thank President Uhuru Kenyatta for picking Hillary Mutyambai. He's a diligent officer and I have known him for years. He will even make the service better. I wish him all the best."

Although his handling of 2017 polls may have been his dark side since a number of opposition supporters were killed by the police, Boinnet would be remembered for improving the renumeration of the officers.

Mr Mutyambai, a former director at National Intelligence Service, becomes the third Inspector General of Police given that David Kimaiyo served as the first ever IG under the new constitution.

Immediately after handing over, Mr Boinnet was sworn in at State House as the next Tourism and Wildlife Chief Administrative Secretary, a position he was nominated to after his term expired.
