Here are the nicknames given to omena in this region.

1. Kisumu Boys

Some people in Kisumu and the rest of the country have nicknamed the small fish also known as dagaa Kisumu Boys.

This is because they come in hundreds as they are too small be served in ones, as is the case among Kisumu Boys students who also walk in groups.

They are also as popular in the region as Kisumu Boys School is.

2. Yawuoi

This translates to ‘boys’ in Luo language, another nickname given to omena in some parts of Kisumu County, especially in Kano Plains and the surrounding regions.

Their energizing effect is likened to that of boys who are known for their strength.

3. Nyithi rech

This is common among children who are yet to come to terms with the fact that omena cannot grow past the small size.

They think they are ‘children of bigger fish’ hence the name which translates to ‘young fish’.

Others do not eat dagaa simply because they cannot eat something that is watching them and want them killed and their eyes closed before proceeding.
