Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua is among the politicians eyeing to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022.
Mutua says he has what it takes to succeed the president who is serving his last term in office.
The Maendeleo Chap Chap governor’s presidential bid is creating jitters and worry to Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka who has equally declared interest to succeed President Kenyatta.
A section of politicians allied to Kalonzo has been fruitlessly piling pressure on Mutua to shelve his bid in favor of the former Vice President.
In June, a section of Kamba politicians, professionals and clergy endorsed Kalonzo’s presidential bid in 2022 polls.
Governor Mutua, however, laughed off the endorsement terming it fake and meant to mislead the Kamba community.
He accused Kalonzo and his allies of pushing to divide the Kamba community.
According to political analysts, Mutua is the man who could deny Kalonzo victory in 2022.
Peter Ngure, a political expert argues that Mutua is the man who will decide whether Kalonzo becomes president in the next elections or not.
He argues that Kalonzo should forget about winning in 2022 if Mutua’s name will be on the presidential ballot.
“Kalonzo’s presidency in 2022 depends on governor Mutua and it is time he (Kalonzo) reached out at him (Mutua) if he is serious in contesting for the top seat,” Ngure said.
The analyst observes that Kalonzo will be guaranteed of full Kamba support if he works with the Machakos governor.
Kalonzo and Mutua fell out after the 2013 general election.
Efforts to unite the two political rivals seem to be hitting a snag as 2022 approaches.
Mutua has insisted that he will not shelve his ambition for Kalonzo or anyone.
Kalonzo, on the other hand, claims that he has the blessings of the Kamba community to fly the presidential ticket in 2022.
The former Vice President equally says that he will not shelve his bid for anyone.
Kalonzo has maintained that it is his time to ascend to power.
