Amani National Congress (ANC) Party Leader Musalia Mudavadi has now claimed that individuals have resorted to forex bureaus to convert proceeds from graft into new notes.
Speaking during a ceremony in Maragoli on Saturday, Mudavadi said that the unveiling of the new notes has made it tough for the corrupt persons to convert the cash.
The former Vice President noted that the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) move to unveil the new notes is laudable.
He narrated how a customer attempted to convert Sh140 million into new currency but his effort was futile. He said that the customer had approached the bank manager of a financial institution, which he did not disclose, in a bid to bank the old notes. The manager asked him to approach the CBK.
He also asked whether he could use a lawyer to bank the millions but he was reminded that the legal office will also be required to reveal the source of the millions before banking them.
Mudavadi further noted that desperation has forced the corrupt officers to buy dollars at a low price.
"People who are desperate are going to forex bureaus and they are buying a dollar for anything between Sh105 and Sh107," stated Mudavadi in a video shared on YouTube by Daily Nation.
