Deputy President William Ruto has cancelled his Mt Kenya tour after it emerged that President Uhuru Kenyatta will be touring the region on Sunday.
Dr Ruto had scheduled to visit Kandara constituency not far from where President Uhuru Kenyatta will be attending a church service in Kenol.
The two leaders would have had a clash of itineraries, a move that could have further raised question about their working relationship lately.
President Uhuru Kenyatta will be at ACK Kenol, his first major trip to Central Kenya, four months after reprimanding a section of MPs allied to Dr Ruto over persistent politicking.
"The answer as to whether the Deputy President will be visiting Murang’a is ‘no’, nothing more," Ruto's spokesman David Mugonyi said.
Another close aide of the DP said that he had not been aware that the President would be touring the area around the time he was scheduled to attend the fundraiser.
"We would not want to be seen as subjecting the two to supremacy contests of sorts," he said.
Mathioya MP Peter Kimari blamed his Kandara counterpart Alice Wahome for planning to host the DP with the full knowledge that the President was visiting.
“I blame the organiser. She has been demonstrating defiance lately, and that’s probably the reason for organising the event,” he told the Sunday Nation.
Previously, Ruto would visit together with Uhuru the expensive Mt Kenya region but the two leaders are seemingly reading from a different script.
Dr Ruto may have opted to cancel the trip so that he cannot be mistaken for defiance against the man he hopes to succeed in 2022.
The DP is banking on Mt Kenya votes for 2022 but the move has seen him tussle a section of politicians allied to President Uhuru Kenyatta who accuse him of sabotage.
President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to make more tours in Mt Kenya region with ODM leader Raila Odinga to popularise the Building Bridges Initiative report.
Those supporting Ruto's bid from Central Kenya include Alice Wahome, Ndindi Nyoro, Rigathi Gachagua, Purity Ngirici, Kimani Ichung'wah among others.
