Residents of Konate in West Mugirango are mourning the death of an elderly man who died after consuming outlawed illicit brew on Wednesday.
The deceased, Andrew Morikwa, is said to have used monthly stipends given by the national government.
“Morikwa is among the beneficiaries of the monthly government stipend. On Wednesday morning he was spotted entering a chang’aa den to drink,” said a local Abel Mwabora.
Mr. Mwabora noted that the deceased was found lying at the road side at 3 pm only for them to discover that he was dead later on.
Area chief, Raphael Orina, said the deceased grandson went to help him go to his house to sleep when he found him dead.
“Morikwa is a chang’aa addict. He was paid the money by the government and ended up spending the money to consume chang’aa instead of buying food to eat," he said.
Orina said a crackdown on illicit brew will be done starting Friday to arrest illicit brew makers and sellers.
