Kiambu politician and anti-drug crusader Gladys Chania now wants Members of Parliament (MPs) investigated over allegations of receiving bribes to compromise writing of departmental reports.
Chania wants the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji and the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) to urgently step in and probe the legislators.
Speaking to journalists in Kiambu Town on Friday, Chania said it is a shame that some MPs could be taking bribes for their own personal interests.
She said reports that some MPs allegedly took bribes to shoot down a report on contraband sugar must be probed.
"The EACC and the DPP must swing into action and take action against MPs who are allegedly demanding and accepting bribes in Parliament," she said.
The activist said some rogue MPs have abandoned their roles and are now pushing their own selfish interests.
"We must stop them and recall them if need be because they have failed to push the interests of the people who elected them into office," she said.
Chania asked the Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi to come clean and address the claims of some MPs taking bribes.
She said that corruption will remain a serious threat if MPs instead of helping investigative agencies are taking part in the vice.
There are reports that some MPs in various departmental committees demand bribes when writing reports on specific matters of national interest.
A section of MPs has claimed that some of their colleagues were allegedly given money to oppose a report on contraband sugar tabled in Parliament on Thursday.
Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa alleges that he was offered a Sh10,000 bribe to oppose the report but rejected it.
In an interview with journalists at Parliament Buildings on Friday, Barasa claimed that bribing is the order of the day in Parliament.
Two weeks ago, a local daily exposed claims of bribery in the National Assembly with reports that MPs allegedly demand as low as Sh10,000 bribes to write favourable reports.
Speaker Justin Muturi said reports of bribery will be investigated.
