Dutch tycoon Tob Cohen's remains are set to be buried at Jewish graveyard on Tuesday, over a week after the recovery of his mutilated body.
The billionaire went missing in August and his remains would be discovered inside a septic tank within his home over a month later.
And according to strict Judaism religion, ten men ought to be by the gravesite for his burial to continue. On Monday, his burial was postponed due to absence of priests.
According to Jewish customs, a quorum of ten adult Jews is required to assemble to recite the Kaddish — the prayer recited by mourners during a burial.
At least ten men are needed to complete the prayers. According to the book of Numbers when Moses sent spies to Canaan, ten of them reported that it was unconquerable.
This was partly explained by lawyer Cliff Ombeta on Monday, following the departure of Cohen's sister Gabrielle Van Straten, who is not allowed to attend the burial.
“She was not to attend the burial because Jewish rites don’t allow women to be present. Only men attend such events,” he said.
Also, his estranged wife, who is accused of murdering him, will only witness the ceremony few meters away due to strict culture and regulations of Jews.
“According to the traditions, Sarah can go but only watch from a distance,” he added.
The tradition, borrowed from the Biblical Moses era, has been practiced for centuries. It's popular in Israel where members of the community are many.
Within Kenya, there are less than 300 Jews, a reason why perhaps Cohen's burial was postponed to allow them get ready for the burial.
