The story of a 72-year-old man from Kirinyaga who was once a millionaire but squandered his riches in less than five years has stoked a debate among Kiambu residents.
Mzee Miano Kaminja is reported to be living in squalor despite having immense wealth years ago.
His story was first raised up in 2016 when he was 70 years old.
Kaminja landed a deal with the government in 2013 when the government wanted to set up a dam at Rukenya village, Kirinyanga County.
He was among the 600 families that were compensated to give way for the construction of the dam.
However, sources indicated that the money he received in 2013 broke his family. He sent them away.
He could go for big hotels, order all people present to get out, clear their bills and make 'good' use of the money with close friends, without any disturbance from other customers.
“They would come to my bar in groups of two or three, order all patrons out and ask me to count the bills incurred by those ordered out, then ask me to close the premises and ensure it was all theirs," said Nancy Muthoni, as was quoted by the Standard. Muthoni was a bar attendant in Kutus town, where Mr. Kaminja used to go.
His story has been shared on social media, United Sates of Kiambu Facebook page and has sparked mixed reactions.
