The High Court in Eldoret will move to the site of the Eldoret wholesale market in a bid to ascertain progress made by the county government of Uasin Gishu on renovation works.
Over 2,000 traders were evicted from the market to pave way for the renovations.
The traders, however, moved to court to challenge the decision. A visit to the market has been planned for February 8 before the case is mentioned at the market on the same day.
Eldoret High Court Judge Antony Ombwayo on Friday directed the county government of Uasin Gishu to comply with orders given by the same court last year in which the county government officials through their lawyers pleaded with the court not to take action against them after failing to honour court's ruling to complete renovations and resettle the traders within 45 days.
The traders through their lawyer Tobias Mugambi said the decision will give a clear picture to the court about the ongoing renovations at the market claiming that the previous court orders had not been followed.
Lawyers representing the county government had applied for more time at the court, noting that the renovations were 90 per cent complete.
The county government closed the market for renovations in March 2018, a decision that caused an uproar among traders that relied on the facility to earn a livelihood.
According to the trader's chairman Zachayo Maina, many of them have not been able to continue with their business and life has been difficult since they were flashed out of the market where they operated for many years and paid taxes as required.
