Anxiety continues to be witnessed among staff at Moi University after the institution's council committee approved a decision to scrap some of the courses being offered at the Kesses-based university.
On Tuesday last week, the committee made the decision to scrap over 40 courses and reduce departments from 80 to 50 as it aims to cut operational costs.
This move was as a result of huge debts amounting to Sh2.7 billion which has threatened to paralyse the operations of the university.
As a result, several lecturers are now fearing that they might lose their jobs.
Unmeasurable panic has now gripped the teaching staff as it is obvious that a good number of staff members will be rendered jobless after the merging of departments.
In an interview with Daily Nation, the dons have complained that the process is not being done in an open manner as they have not received any official communication from the university.
"It is not being done in an open manner so we are not sure if our jobs are safe. We just read in the newspapers about the ongoing restructuring. We hope to get more information this week,” said one of the dons quoted by Daily Nation.
However, according to Dr Ishmael Aiyabei who is the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Moi University branch secretary, the process might only affect the non-teaching staff.
"We were told that the merging will only affect the administrative section and not the academic unit. This could mainly affect some of the non-teaching staff and not the academic staff. The heads of departments were told to send their proposals on the matter and we believe they have done so,” said Dr Aiyabei.
