According to an article published by the Daily Nation, the suspected Al-Shabaab militants had signalled the driver to stop by waving at him on the Elwak-Borehole 11 road.

The driver, whose identity has been withheld for security reasons, instead sped off and that is when the militants began shooting at the Matatu leading to the deflation of one of the tyres.

The incident was confirmed by Mandera County Commissioner Onesmus Kyatha who said that no one was injured.

“A vehicle ferrying construction workers from Borehole 11 was last evening targeted by suspected Al-Shabaab militants but their driver saved them,” Kyatha stated.

Kyatha further stated that the vehicle had been hired by a construction company which was building a health care centre in Borehole 11 township.

“The driver is a local but most of the passengers were non-locals whom we believe were the target. The attackers shot at the vehicle but no one was injured,” said Kyatha.

Police have launched investigations into the incident.

The town of Mandera which is on the border of Kenya and Somalia has been prone to attacks from the Al-Shabaab militants.
