Friedrich Ebert Stiftung is set to roll out a three year project aimed at building climate change resilience and adaptation in the Lake Victoria basin.
The project coordinator Linda Achieng said the population along the basin is susceptible to climate change effects.
Ms Achieng said 13 counties in Western Kenya region will benefit from the project.
“The project will build climate change resilience and adaptation in the Lake Victoria basin region,” she said
She said the lake basin region has been experiencing extreme climatic variations noting that regions residing adjacent to the lake region experience rise in water levels caused by exploitation of forests resources.
“We have identified where climate is affecting the locals and find out on which best strategies can be put in place by the counties and build linkages,” she said.
Speaking in Kisumu on Tuesday during a meeting bringing together stakeholders from the region, Achieng said climate change threats can be reduced if the right and necessary mitigation, adaptation and coping strategies are implemented.
She said the project will involve communities who are directly or indirectly affected by climate change for the development of adaptation strategies.
“We will integrate climate change adaptation into local and county level adaptation strategies that seek to identify sectors that are being impacted by climate change,” she said.
Achieng noted that the ultimate goal is to increase the adaptive capacity of communities to cope with climate change through policy interventions, resource mobilization and knowledge transfer.
The FES climate change project, which targets communities, policy makers, civil society at the Lake Victoria basin region, seeks to establish a more adequate way to alleviate poverty and other threats caused by climate change.
