Thirteen people have been rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital for treatment after a road accident along Nairobi's Waiyaki Way on Sunday.

The injured were passengers aboard a Climax Coach bus travelling from Siaya County to Nairobi.

The bus crashed at Waruku stage near Deloitte building.

A heavy traffic snarl ensued following the accident.

According to Nation, there have been contradicting information over the exact number of those injured.

Earlier, NTSA boss Francis Meja and Nairobi Traffic Police commandant Peter Ndung’u claimed that only seven people were injured.

However, Nation later followed up the matter to KNH and confirmed that 13 people had been admitted from the scene of the accident.

According to the bus' conductor Charles Njue, the accident occurred after the driver applied the emergency brakes to avoid hitting a vehicle that abruptly joined the highway from the stage.

He blamed the driver of the Latema Sacco minibus and said he was dangerously carrying passengers.

"The driver of that Latema bus was just carrying passengers in the road and this stretch is somehow narrow. When the driver of the Climax bus tried to signal for him to pave way, he immediately entered the road and sped off," said Njue.

However, an eye witness Irene Achieng who was injured in the accident said the Climax bus driver was on phone when the accident occured.
