The county government of Uasin Gishu has unveiled its plans to re-inspect more than 1300 bars in Eldoret town before allowing them to resume operations in January 2018.

Speaking on Thursday after chairing an inter-agency committee meeting to discuss licensure of bars, Uasin Gishu county secretary Peter Lelei said that most of the joints are yet to meet the requirements of operations, adding that they risk closure over the same.

He noted that most of the bars in Eldoret town lack washrooms and other facilities needs for hygienic purposes. He also said that the new licenses will only be issued to businesses that fully comply with the regulations of the county government.

"We will not approve any bar located near learning institutions and those which do not adhere to public health regulations such as having toilets," he said, as quoted by a local daily.

On his part, Alcoholic Drinks Control Board chairman Elijah Cherus said that measures are being put in place to ensure that illicit liquor is no longer sold in any of the bars in the town.

He also said that they will conduct a crackdown on bars selling illicit liquor, arrest and charged the owners.

Turbo deputy commissioner Gideon Ombongi echoed their sentiments saying businesses owners importing liquor from Uganda will be arrested and prosecuted.
