Opar was gunned down at his petrol station in Kendu Bay on Friday night, only two months after his nomination by Governor Cyprian Awiti, and a week to his inauguration.

The deceased was allegedly shot while doing evening counts of the day with his workers, making him the second county official to be killed in four years, after the murder of Kibiri Ward Representative Boaz Odhiambo in 2014.

He was reportedly attacked by three assailants who had been hiding inside his office after mysteriously accessing the building.

On Thursday, the father of six raised an alarm that a group has been trailing him on a motorbike, and had at some point last week tried to break into his home in Apida.

He said that the motorbike had no headlights, but its passengers were using spotlights, and had made it a routine to stop at his gate.

“There is a motor bike being driven across this village at night with a sinister motive. The motorcycle has no headlights but its passengers have spotlights. They have been coming to my gate. Last week I saw them outside my gate then they drove off.

“I know what they want. I also know them and I also know who had sent them. I want to tell the Chief to have them arrested. If they cannot be arrested, the people will arrest them," he said as quoted by Standard.

The killing was confirmed by County Directorate of Criminal Investigations Commander Daniel Wachira who said that five suspects have since been arrested and are being grilled by the police.

Some of those being held include Opar's workers.

Governor Awiti who is on sick leave also condemned the murder, calling upon DCI boss George Kinoti to lend a hand in ensuring that the suspects are nabbed and charged.
