As Kenyans from all walks of life flocked to churches while others thronged entertainment joints to usher in the festive season, a group of Muslims in Eldoret town organized lunch for over 500 street children in one of the prestigious hotels, Asis.
This was in a bid to make the children who live off from remains of the dustbins enjoy and join other Kenyans in celebrating Christmas.
The group of Muslims who organized the lunch asked Kenyans to let love prevail and help those who are less privileged as a way of thanksgiving and ensuring that Kenyans embrace the spirit of sharing and giving without looking at their religious differences.
Led by the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK) Uasin Gishu Chairman Sheikh Abubakar Bini and businessman Hassan Kosgei, the group of Muslims further challenged the government to recover all the public money stolen through corruption and redirect it to programs that can help change the lives of street children.
“Despite an increase in the number of street families in major towns like Eldoret and Kitale, many county governments are yet to construct homes with good facilities where genuine street children can be helped and call home,” said Bini.
“I urge parents to take up their responsibilities of raising children and stop abandoning them to a harsh life on the streets,” added Kosgei.
