A prison officer attached to the Machakos GK prison died on Monday evening after being involved in a road accident along the Machakos-Nairobi highway.

The officer was riding his motorbike from Machakos showground and was hit by a trailer near the Red Cross offices.

According to witnesses, the officer died on the spot while his two passengers sustained serious injuries. 

The incident was confirmed by Machakos GK Prison superintendent Charles Manzo.

Addressing journalists at the scene of the accident, Manzo said that the officer had just finished his duty at the Machakos ASK showground and was heading to town. 

"The accident occurred along Machakos-Nairobi highway near Kenya Red Cross Society offices barely a kilometre from the Machakos Central Business District (CBD)," said Maanzo. 

"The officer had just finished his duty at the showground and was heading towards town when he was hit by a trailer heading towards Nairobi. He died on the spot," added Mandi.

Those injured were taken to the Machakos Level Five Hospital for treatment while the body of the deceased was taken to Machakos Hospital mortuary.

The accident caused a traffic snarl-up for some hours before traffic officers arrived at the scene.
