Deputy President William Ruto has expressed the need for serious strategies to be put in place to cushion farmers against perennial problems surrounding maize production.
This comes even as farmers from the North Rift have experienced problems of the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) delaying in paying farmers.
Speaking as he graced an event where the Boit Family gave land to the African Inland Church (AIC) in Kamagut, Turbo Sub County on Sunday, Ruto said strategies need to be put in place to avoid problems in future.
“The problem that we faced as a government in buying maize is that we got more maize than that which had been budgeted for,” said the DP.
"It is very important to do value addition, this is through processing which is among our big four agendas. When cooperatives establish own milling plants, they are able to compete with other producers and realize big returns,” he added.
Uasin Gishu governor Jackson Mandago who also attended the event stressed that value addition in maize production will be the best way out to solve problems that farmers have been facing for a long time now each year.
Mandago also asked small cooperatives to consider merging and forming serious trade outfits, draft proposals and secure cheap loans from his government for the establishment of maize milling plants.
