Probably when one sees him, a picture of a strict public servant with tough conditions comes into mind, notwithstanding the swiftness in implementing what he says.
So passionate he is, that President Uhuru Kenyatta persistently made reference to him while campaigning in the large Gusii region during 2017 elections.
"I gave you Matiang'i and he has never let me down. This is a clear indication that you will always work closely with my administration," Uhuru once said in a rally.
Before joining government, Matiang'i, a teacher by profession, was an IT consultant, doubling as a lecturer in the University of Nairobi.
In his private life, Matiang'i is a staunch church follower and often leads his fellow worshippers in praise and worship songs in church.
At Sironga SDA recently, the Interior Cabinet Secretary revealed how he fancies being choir master and his strong believe in perfections.
"I used to teach choir members and I still do. Singing is part of praising the Lord. Let me show you what I can do practically," he said, taking to the podium as worshippers joined.
Though it's not clear about his future in politics, it is however rumoured that Mr Matiang'i will be in the race to succeed Governor John Nyagarama in 2022.
