Over years, youths from Garissa County have been dropping out of school to join militia groups such as Al Shabaab.

The education sector has a role to play in the fight against radicalisation.

It is the duty of all Kenyan citizens to protect the country from terror groups.

Here are 3 things Garissa schools can do to help tackle radicalization

1. Listen to students' voices

A good learning environment is where teachers and other stakeholders listen to students.

If a student is not happy with anything, learn to listen to him or her.

Students feel happy if they have teachers who are ever willing to listen to them when they are aggrieved.

2. Create an all-inclusive environment

Schools in Garissa should create an all-inclusive environment. No student should be made to feel sidelined in any way.

Students will have no reason to consider the idea of joining terror groups if they are made to feel part of the education system all the time.

3. Encourage empathy among students

Students should be thought about the importance of human life.

They should know the pain one goes through when bereaved.

They will not find it right to join militia groups aimed at taking away lives if they thought the importance of respecting others’ lives.
