Four people have lost their lives in Athi River, Mavoko sub-county of Machakos County.

 The four, employees of Mavoko Water and Sewerage company (Mavwasco) are said to have lost their lives on Tuesday after slipping into a reservoir belonging to the company. 

The tragic incident is said to have happened at the treatment plant at Kwa Mang'eli slum along River Athi at around 2.00pm on Tuesday.

Operations to retrieve the bodies are ongoing in a joint operation by the police, fire brigade, members of the public, and provincial administrators led by Mavoko chief Nzau Komo.

Speaking to journalists at the scene, Komo said that it's possible the four suffocated and died.

 "We suspect that the four employees of Mavwasco have suffocated and died, we are yet to establish the course, "he said. 

He said more details will be given after the rescue is over.

Residents are surrounding the sewerage treatment facility where the rescue operations are taking place.

None of the bodies has been retrieved so far.
