On June 13, 2016, former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama landed in "hot soup" after he allegedly invited President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy President William Ruto to Uhuru Park for a ‘friendly fight’.
Addressing the press at Capitol Hill in Nairobi County, Muthama challenged the duo to meet him and Siaya Senator James Orengo at the park for a fight.
He also warned the President and his Deputy against intimidating Raila Odinga as the race to State House gained momentum.
“I want to invite Uhuru and Ruto for a duel at Uhuru Park with Orengo and myself; who are you to threaten Raila?” Muthama is alleged to have said.
On October 6, 2017, Muthama appeared in court to respond to hate speech and incitement charges, which he denied.
While appearing before Senior Principal Magistrate Martha Mutuku at Milimani Law Courts, the politician maintained that he was innocent.
He told the court that the claims that he had incited Kenyans were baseless and politically instigated.
The former senator has continued being vocal on matters of national interests.
He remains one of the strongest supporters of former Vice President Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka who is eying the nation’s top seat in 2022.
