State House said the meeting between the two leaders revolved around development issues but the presence of Governor Mike Sonko and National Assembly Majority Whip Benjamin Washiali raised eyebrows.

"President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy, Dr. @WilliamsRuto today shared a working lunch at the DP's Harambee House Annex office during which the two leaders discussed matters related to the Government‘s development agenda," State House said.

Lately, DP Ruto has accused Uhuru of using fight against corruption to dwindle his 2022 chances. Similar allegations have been raised about Handshake with Raila Odinga, a move which is said to have angered the president.

But according to Wambugu, Uhuru's impromptu meeting with Ruto will not 'change anything' between them. He also said that until Ruto supports war against corruption and handshake, the president is not ready to cede grounds.

"Friends and ‘non-friends’ are asking me what it means now that Uhuru Kenyatta went to see William Ruto. (I don’t know why I am assumed to know ). All that I can say is that no matter how many public meetings they have nothing will change between them unless/until (i) Ruto stops his opposition to the fight against corruption, and (ii) Ruto genuinely embraces the ‘handshake," he argued.

Photos of the two leaders holding discussions were circulated on social media even though they did not give a press statement over their rare meeting at Ruto's office.

Last week, Uhuru issued a stern warning to his political allies over the war against corruption, a move that raised political temperatures. Subsequently, the Head of State also had his social media accounts suspended, leaving Kenyans guessing over his next move.
